PPF Warranty Explained: What 4-Year vs 12-Year Film Actually Costs You

Ask five different shops for a PPF quote and you'll get five different numbers — sometimes a difference of a lakh or more on the same car. The reason usually isn't markup. It's warranty length, and almost nobody explains what that number actually buys you. At IDE Autoworks we install film across five warranty tiers, from 4-year to 12-year-plus, so here's the honest breakdown of what changes as that number goes up — and what doesn't.

What "Warranty" Actually Covers

This is the part most people get wrong before they've even compared prices. A PPF warranty covers manufacturing defects in the film itself — yellowing, cracking, delamination, and bubbling that shows up without any physical damage. It does not cover a stone chip that punctures the film, a scratch from a careless wash, or damage from an accident. That's not a loophole — it's just what a warranty is: a guarantee on how the product ages, not insurance against the road.

Reality: the warranty tells you how confident the manufacturer is that the film won't degrade on its own. It says nothing about how well it'll survive your driving.

The Five Tiers, and What Actually Changes

Here's what we install, and what the price difference is actually paying for:

  • 4-Year Film — ₹40,000 — Entry-tier TPU film. Solid stone-chip and UV protection, but a shorter clarity and self-healing lifespan than the tiers above it.
  • 5-Year Film — ₹55,000 — A step up in film grade with more consistent self-healing response and better long-term optical clarity.
  • 7-Year Film — ₹85,000 — Noticeably better UV stability and gloss retention over years of Indian sun, not just a longer warranty sticker.
  • 10-Year Film — ₹1,20,000 — Premium-grade TPU with the clearest warranty terms and the most reliable self-healing performance in daily use.
  • 12+-Year Film — ₹2,00,000+ — Top-tier film construction, built for owners who want the best clarity and performance for as long as they own the car, not just the longest number on paper.

The honest pattern: warranty length isn't just "the same film with a longer promise" bolted on. Each tier up is generally a real jump in film grade, and that's where the added cost actually goes.

The Cost-Per-Year Math, Worked Out

If you divide each price by its warranty period, the numbers tell a more useful story than the sticker price alone:

  • 4-Year Film: ₹40,000 ÷ 4 = ₹10,000 per year
  • 5-Year Film: ₹55,000 ÷ 5 = ₹11,000 per year
  • 7-Year Film: ₹85,000 ÷ 7 ≈ ₹12,150 per year
  • 10-Year Film: ₹1,20,000 ÷ 10 = ₹12,000 per year
  • 12+-Year Film: ₹2,00,000 ÷ 12 ≈ ₹16,650 per year

Reality: the cost per year doesn't keep dropping the longer the warranty runs — it actually flattens out around the 5 to 10-year tiers, then rises again at the top. So "buy the longest warranty, it's better value" isn't quite true. The 12-year-plus tier isn't cheaper per year — it's for owners who specifically want the best film performance available, for as long as they keep the car.

So Which Tier Actually Makes Sense For You?

This comes down to how long you actually plan to keep the car, not how long the film is rated for. A few honest questions worth asking yourself before you pick a tier:

  • How many years do you realistically expect to own this car before upgrading or selling it?
  • Do you care about squeezing every rupee of value out of the warranty period, or about having the best-performing film on the car regardless of cost?
  • Is this a daily driver that'll take real wear, or a car you'll baby and want looking flawless for a decade-plus?

If you typically change cars every 4 to 5 years, the mid tiers make practical sense — you're not paying for years of coverage you'll never use. If you keep cars long-term or simply want the best clarity and self-healing performance available, the higher tiers earn their price.

What To Ask For, Regardless of Tier

The tier matters less than getting these right, at any price point:

  • The exact film brand and material — we work with Motorprotek, Ultraguard, Garware, Car Pro, Forceshield, STEK, 3M, Avery Dennison, XPEL and Orafol, and which one fits your car and budget is worth an actual conversation, not a guess.
  • Warranty terms in writing — what's covered, what voids it, and who honours it.
  • Proof of past installs, not just marketing photos.
  • Clean edge work and proper surface prep — a great film badly installed still looks and performs like a bad job.

The number on the quote is only half the picture. The film grade behind it, and the hands installing it, are the other half — and that's true whether you're looking at a 4-year film or a 12-year one.
